River Ritual
2011-2013 - Filming for this video began in 2011 during the second semester of my MFA in Creative Inquiry at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, CA.
To begin my thesis project, Rivers, a series of abstract paintings based around the maps of rivers which were then turned into altars, I traveled to New Orleans to touch in with the Mississippi River which was my first painting subject for this project. Living there before entering graduate school I developed a heart felt connection with this city where the presence of the river interweaves itself into the identity of those that live on its shores.
To center myself into my project I held a prayerful ceremony with my friends Kate Adair, an actress, and Lucia Craig, an activist philosopher, where we poured our dreams into water mixed with honey and offered it to the Mississippi River.
Lauren Belski, writer and teacher at Brooklyn college, collaborated on this video by writing the spoken text along with Brian Russ, musician and owner of Camper's Rules Records, who created the soundscape.
