Inhale/Exhale Two more “Mississippi River Watershed”s Better shots of the newest in my Portraits of Rivers series:
I made this today. It’s me and my guitar in my studio. --—> Mystery (in-studio recording (Oct 17, 2019) I wrote this song in Nov 2016 after the election. It’s a sonic ladder I use to climb back into myself whenever I’m starting to lose my sense of security. It reminds me that we have power when we come together, even if I can’t see it in the moment.
I was feeling it today and decided to record myself singing it while playing my guitar. It’s not meant to be a highly polished track, I consider this more of a field recording of an artist in the wild of her studio. (The ambient background noise is the sounds of people walking along Bourbon St). The painting is one of mine which I call “Prayerful” Enjoy :) Back at it on St. Peter’s near Decatur. I made a new one. “Cosmic Meditation at Sunrise” #Peace. (To me these two feel like and inhale and an exhale.) And I brought out my “Rivers of the Gulf of Mexico” again to hang with my “Mississippi River Watershed”. Been a while since she’s come to da square....hopefully I’ll have 2 more Rivers done for next weekend.
Update from yesterday, I had forgotten to paint in the credit for the quote on my Unicorn Tapestry which comes from The Tempest by William Shakespeare. The Unicorn Tapestry design is based on a medieval tapestry that hangs in the cloisters in New York City. Check her out 🦄🌹🌸🍀✨--—> https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/467642 Though, honestly, it gets recognized more often as being something in the background of various Harry Potter movies. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hunt_of_the_Unicorn I kept a reference to the pomegranate tree from the original scene, because pomegranates are mystical and lovely, and I intentionally left out the gate closing her in. Sometimes I surrounded her in spirals. I started making the Unicorn Tapestry around 2015. I used to do them with an entirely red background....and few times in black. In considering what kind of language would vibe well with this arcane and mystical image I typed “Shakespeare Unicorn” into google and found the phrase “Now I will believe that there are unicorns.” Even though that phrase is said sarcastically in the play...I still felt it worked with my image to make something magical. And it seems to work for others too. They always sell, always to magical people. I also have a habit of making space unicorns on random canvas scraps. I guess they cross-pollinated in the back of my mind during my recent art break. ... and as I’ve started up this season I’ve been feeling these Space Unicorns. I guess at this point they are a series as I can’t shake because of how happy making them makes me.
